APDA – The Good, The Bad & The Hack

Introduction

Huntington’s NSW ACT is a member of The Accessible Product Design Alliance (APDA), which is a group of not-for-profit consumer health organisations working together to represent people with chronic conditions who are significantly impacted by inaccessible products and packaging.

The Alliance was formed to better align advocacy to government and industry to improve access to products and packaging that are easy to use for these consumers.  As well as Huntington’s NSW ACT, APDA members are: Arthritis Australia, Arthritis New Zealand, Cerebral Palsy Alliance, Cystic Fibrosis Australia, MND Australia, MS Australia, Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of Australia, Pain Australia, Parkinson’s Australia and Stroke Foundation.

This campaign aims for those living with a disability to share their experience of different products to raise awareness of accessible and inaccessible experiences, support others to make their lives easier and help us educate product and packaging manufactures about what they need to improve.

You can be part of the fun by creating a short video that captures either:

  • The Good – helpful product designs that makes a difference to your everyday life

  • The Bad – designs needing change and improving

  • The Hack – product tips & tricks. Remember hacks can be using a product in an unconventional way or having a technique that helps the user accomplish an activity in a more efficient or pain-free way.

Steps to get involved

1. Film

  • Introduce yourself and the condition you live with e.g. “Hi I’m Alex and have Parkinson’s…”.

  • Film yourself for 30 seconds talking about one of the following options:

  • The Good – helpful product designs: Give a shout out to a good product or packaging design

  • The Bad – designs needing change: Share your struggles with a bad product or packaging design

  • The Hack – product tips & tricks: Share a product hack or tip that makes your life easier

2. Send us the video – Use the form below to send us the video. Please read the terms, conditions and consent information before ticking yes.

We will then edit the footage and will share it with the world as part of our work to raise awareness of accessibility issues.

Important note: Content should promote healthy sustainable living, all suggestions should also be legal, safe and non-violent in nature. If you are receiving a financial benefit from the product/s suggested we will be unable to share this content. It is the APDA’s discretion to use the video and we may not be able to respond to enquiries regarding your contribution.

How to film:

What to say: Share your first name, your condition and then:

  • The Good – helpful product designs: share and show the product and why you think it’s accessible and how it’s made a difference to you.

  • The Bad – designs needing change: share and show the product and why you struggle with it and how if it was changed it would make a difference to you.

  • The Hack – product tips & tricks: say why you needed the hack or tip, what it is and how it has helped you.

Filming tips:

  • Lighting: natural light is often most flattering

  • Sound:

    • Good clear audio is really important, so make sure your recording device isn’t too far away from you.

    • Background noise – try and film in a quite space with minimal background sounds.

  • Background: check there isn’t anything embarrassing in the background you might not want to be seen in the video e.g. personal photos or dirty laundry.
